In “Past Meets Future,” The Section Magazine highlights Portland Japanese Garden: Cultural Crossing  and design architect Kengo Kuma. In an analysis of the distinctive use of natural wood and greenery in Kuma’s design for the 2020 Olympic Games National Stadium in Tokyo, the article looks back to his past work, focusing on the Cultural Crossing project and the recent book, Kengo Kuma: Portland Japanese Garden. The expansion of the Portland Japanese Garden is lauded as an iconic, site-specific work that engages its rich natural setting through design and materials. Kuma took inspiration from historic Japanese architecture, but with a contemporary interpretation, and the article explains how the design combines techniques from Japan with local materials to create a “natural harmony.”
