The Area Plan for the UC Santa Cruz Marine Science Campus is inspired by its stunning natural setting, a protected coastal wetland along Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which is a focus of research at the campus. The vision aims for seamless integration of the coastal landscape with new green development achieved through a visionary yet pragmatic approach that complements, restores, and enhances coastal ecosystems. A memorable space for learning and research will be created, featuring common areas for impromptu encounters among faculty and students that will contribute to an atmosphere of intellectual exchange. Walker Macy’s 2020 SCUP Design Award-winning Coastal Biology Building is the first built element of the plan that expresses the integration of native landscapes.
