This planning study evaluated potential building sites, overall building capacity, and circulation alternatives in the southwestern part of the UC Santa Cruz campus, the Arts Area. Walker Macy updated UCSC’s 2002 plan in 2013 to account for new development in the study area that deviated from the original plan. This steeply sloped and heavily wooded site posed challenges for universal accessibility, pedestrian safety, and service access. Circulation routes were chosen to be accessible to all, provide clear wayfinding (even as the district densifies), separate pedestrian and vehicular routes, and capitalize on the site’s expansive views over the iconic Meadow.
