The City of Riverside has embarked on an effort to “put the river back in Riverside” by creating a River District, envisioned as a beautiful, safe, walkable, inviting place that reconnects the community and neighborhoods to the Santa Ana River. Led by ECO Northwest and Walker Macy, the study, funded by a California State Coastal Conservancy grant, evaluates economic potential and implementation strategies with the goal of transforming the Santa Ana River corridor into a fiscally and environmentally sustainable place.
Walker Macy provided existing conditions analyses, District definition and urban design visioning for placemaking, park improvements, riverfront access and trail alignments. The plan is grounded in the natural amenities of the riverfront and Riverside’s surrounding landscapes and situates the River District as an important way to stitch together downtown, Arts District, Innovation District, and UC Riverside.
