LINK to Opportunity/ Hilltop Neighborhood Streetscape

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, Walker Macy led the public realm design for a 23-block area in this culturally diverse neighborhood along the expansion of Sound Transit’s Tacoma LINK light rail. This expansion represents an important new amenity to Tacoma’s Stadium District and Hilltop neighborhood. Our role was focused on establishing community benefit through inclusive, thoughtful community-driven public realm design. The design responds to the unique characteristics of the Hilltop area, including its mix of residential, commercial, and institutional uses. Working with a large stakeholder group in this historically African American, working-class neighborhood, Walker Macy introduced design approaches that embraced inclusive economic growth, culturally-specific design and programming, accessibility, and authenticity. This project has grown to include an adjacent festival street area, and engagement with adjacent affordable housing projects. The result of these efforts will be a special place for the neighborhood that is forward-looking, inclusive, and celebrates the culture of the neighborhood.
