The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde held a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of tumwata village, a 23-acre project that will heal the land, improve the environment, and reshape Willamette Falls, the site of a former paper mill.
Willamette Falls is arguably one of most historically significant areas in the Northwest. Home of Indigenous tribes since time immemorial, this was also the founding location of the Oregon Territories, the end of the Oregon trail, and the birthplace of Oregon industry and power generation. Once a large paper mill that has now been demolished, we began our work there re-imagining the site’s future and establishing a framework plan and new zoning code which allows a new mix of uses and public access to the falls. Recently, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde (CTGR) purchased its historic homeland at Willamette Falls, and Walker Macy is honored to be part of the design team working with the CTGR to develop an approach to establishing a new mix of uses for the site.
