Eugene’s Downtown Riverfront Park and Seattle’s Fritz Hedges Waterway Park Recognized with Multiple Awards

Walker Macy’s work on Eugene’s Downtown Riverfront Park was recognized during this year’s Oregon ASLA Awards with an Honor Award in General Design and the People’s Choice Award. The project was also selected for the 2022 AIA Eugene People’s Choice Award for Landscape Architecture. Our work on the Downtown Riverfront Park transformed a post-industrial riverfront site into a major downtown attraction and catalyst for mixed-use development. Reconnecting downtown to the Willamette River, the project provides a stage for public life, new recreation opportunities, and illuminates important stories of Eugene’s historic Black community and the site’s origins.

Walker Macy’s design for Seattle’s Fritz Hedges Waterway Park also received an Honor Award in General Design from Oregon ASLA. This project transformed a formerly degraded industrial site on the Portage Bay waterfront into one that includes a salmon-friendly shoreline, celebrates the site’s rich cultural history, and reconnects the University District to the water.  As an oasis of enhanced natural spaces on Portage Bay’s highly impacted waterfront, the landscapes, interpretive experiences, and light watercraft access immerse visitors in the intertwined story of ecology and human use.
