Duwamish Valley Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy

Walker Macy is leading a Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy for the Duwamish Valley, including the South Park and Georgetown neighborhoods. Our team is working with historically underserved local communities and the city of Seattle to co-create a vision and strategy for the shoreline of the adjacent Duwamish River estuary . Walker Macy synthesized priorities of local residential and industrial communities into an initial vision and strategy for publicly led investment in long-term SLR flooding adaptation that provides multiple benefits, including public access, habitat, and community spaces. A central aspect of this strategy is a focus on anti-displacement and creating opportunities for residents and businesses to prosper in place.

This project serves as a first step to initiate community conversations and interagency coordination on sea level rise adaptation. As the City continues to advance adaptation work, it will continue to adjust and update the vision and direction based on ongoing community engagement. This includes collaboration with community members on the design of pilot projects. The City will continue to prioritize ongoing and meaningful engagement and coordination with formal organizations representing community interests within ongoing planning and design for flooding adaptation to ensure community voices are represented in decision-making.
