Whitman College Projects

Walker Macy has continually worked with Whitman College since 2015, providing campus planning and landscape architectural design on projects needing quick response and a thorough understanding of campus guidelines, staff, and culture.

Whitman College, located within the historic city of Walla Walla, has developed a strong campus identity centered on its liberal arts education and close-knit community. With local off-campus housing difficult to find and challenging to afford, the college is implementing several student housing developments to expand student life through its Living at Whitman Initiative. Walker Macy has worked on several of these housing projects, including a 150-bed residence and a new campus dining facility, geared primarily towards second-year students. Stanton includes recreational spaces, and flexible outdoor social spaces, that have set a precedent for future construction and renovation projects. The firm is also currently working on apartment-style housing for upperclassmen near the edge of campus. The project includes three residential buildings, centered around the restoration of College Creek, which weaves through the development. The site design offers a variety of outdoor spaces for students to enjoy, and the landscape is designed to move Whitman to a more climate-resilient and sustainable approach to plantings and water use.
