Walker Macy has been working consistently over the years with the Warm Springs reservation on a variety of pro-bono improvement projects. In partnership with the Warm Springs Community Action Team, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Kirby Nagelhout Construction, and Hacker Architects, Walker Macy’s most recent project has been the Commissary Business Incubator Project, a plan to move and revive the oldest building on the reservation. The Commissary is an historic 126-year-old structure, originally designed as a storage depot and distribution point for grain, flour, and supplies by the federal government. Between the 1960s and the late 1990s, it was the home of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs’ Natural Resources Department. On Monday April 4th, the building was moved 1,000 feet by truck from the corner of Federal Place and North Hollywood Boulevard to the intersection of Highway 36 and Paiute Avenue. The building will be turned into a multi-functional community space, with a café, food cart pod, commercial kitchen, office space, and retail store. It will also feature programming to support local businesses and entrepreneurs with mentorship, classes, and resources for Native-owned businesses through the Economic Grounds program. The first of three phases is scheduled to be completed in early 2023, and includes the re-opening of the commissary space featuring retail, coworking, and business spaces.
