Scripps Institution of Oceanography Physical Planning Study

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is one of the nation’s oldest environmental and marine science research campuses. The campus is a series of terraces descending towards the beach. With incremental development over many years, the campus has few social, pedestrian, and bike areas, significant ADA challenges, parking and traffic issues, and National Historic Registry and older buildings that are reaching the end of their lifespan. An essential focus of the plan is to provide SIO with strategies for embodying their climate science mission in the quality, livability, and sustainable design of the campus’ built environment. Walker Macy, as prime campus planner, led a plan to locate 460,000 sf of new development and renovation on the campus. The firm’s landscape-oriented approach focused on ‘connective tissue’ for the campus: streets, trails, reduction of private vehicle traffic, preservation and enhancement of coastal landscapes, building-to-building access, universal accessibility, and enhancing sense of place.
