NAYA Generations Early Learning Academy

Portland, OR

Walker Macy was part of the team that designed a culturally-specific housing and education community for Portland’s inter-Tribal and non-Tribally affiliated Native American community. The housing development setting brings foster children and elders together into an inter-generational setting. The housing units face inward toward two shared courtyards, and looping walking paths provide amenities for both young and old. The central community garden, the hub of the community, allows community members a space to grow their own food, while building meaningful relationships with neighbors. Walker Macy implemented a native plant palette while integrating species that were important to local Native groups represented in the area. Many landscape elements used natural wood to highlight the use of local materials and the importance of the historic use of these materials.
