From a grassroots DIY skate spot to a new and improved community asset, The Courts 2.0 is officially breaking ground. What began in 2020 as an improvised skatepark built by Portland State University students and the local community on the abandoned tennis courts adjacent to Shattuck Hall, grew into a community hub and became one of the most active spaces in downtown Portland. After its closure in 2024, the community rallied to bring The Courts back in its second iteration at SW 4th Ave. and Lincoln St.
Walker Macy is proud to partner with Portland State University, Skaters for Portland Skateparks, Collective Concrete, Grindline Skateparks, Humber Design Group, and Prosper Portland on the next chapter of this unique space. The new skate plaza will preserve the spirit of the original Courts while creating an active recreation gateway into Portland State University campus. The improved site will provide more generous seating and gathering areas, integrated skate features, art opportunities, and lots of flexible open space with smooth ground for DIY features to fill in.
We celebrated yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony and look forward to welcoming the community back when The Courts 2.0 opens later this summer.
