
"If landscape architecture were a recipe, it would require a dollop of inspiration, a pinch of economic understanding, and a seasoning of art history," says Ray. "The result would be different every time you try it." Stephen discovered landscape architecture when he was young. "I remember looking at my grandmother's copies of House Beautiful," he remembers. "I was fascinated by the wonderful plan drawings of the houses and gardens." After starting out in architecture at University of Michigan, the Wisconsin native decided he'd rather work with plants. Before coming to Walker Macy, he lived in Seattle for 35 years and worked on projects such as Gasworks Park, an iconic example of industrial archaeology.
