"Socially conscious design requires cooperation, not control, between space and community," says Raila. "This stands in need of not only an understanding of architectural principals, design, and aesthetics, but also a comprehensive understanding of and respect for the history, enduring culture, community identity, environment, socio-economic principles that the site is dependent on." For Raila, formative experiences included studies in France and the design charette for Pier 70 in San Francisco. "I experienced the power and complexity of working with a large group of designers from a variety of disciplines." A Connecticut native and recent transplant to Portland, Raila is pursuing the region's trails and natural areas, as well as her newfound enthusiasm for cycling.
