New Hires and Promotions

Walker Macy is pleased to announce that we have selected our 2011 Summer Intern.
Xiao Zhou will be joining us from the University of Massachusetts starting this June. Xiao has a deep rooted interest in exploring the balance between sustainability and spatial organization. While at Walker Macy, he looks forward to marrying his design experiences from China with his academic studies from the US. In addition to his impressive portfolio, Xiao has competed and placed in a number of national and international competitions and is serving as a volunteer for Youth Landscape Architecture, a nonprofit website.
We welcome Xiao Zhou to the Walker Macy team and congratulate him on his notable achievements.
SF Veterans Memorial Design Competition Finalists
WM has teamed with artist Larry Kirkland to compete in the San Francisco Veterans Memorial design competition. The team was selected as one of three finalists and appeared for a press conference. More information about the project here.
U of O Matthew Knight Arena Opens Tonight
As part of an architect-led team, WM provided site planning and landscape design services for this new, state of the art basketball arena. The site will also be the home of the nearly-completed Ford Alumni Center. The landscape design and building entries express the energetic activity of the arena's interior.
Clatsop Community College
Walker Macy was part of the team providing renovation and enhancement to Clatsop Community College's Jerome Campus in Astoria. The institution is Oregon's oldest community college, and the renovation project provided substantial improvements to the historic Towler Hall and other facilities. The project has been tremendously well received by the campus community.
Promotions
In recognition of their contributions to the firm's success, several team members have recently been promoted. Michael Gaussa and Stephen Ray have been named Project Directors, and Ben Johnson has been named Associate.
Walker Macy Team Presented at SCUP-45
Walker Macy team members and staff from UC Santa Cruz presented Master Planning for a Sustainable Marine Science Campus on July 13 at the SCUP Conference in Minneapolis. The presentation covered the firm's master plan for the University's evolving Marine Science Campus, situated in a sensitive natural area. More information about the project here.
Centennial Park Opens
Walker Macy was part of the design team for the new Centennial Park in Redmond, Oregon. The park opened to the community on July 2 with a ribbon-cutting celebration and dedication.
Walker Macy Presented at the Nature Play Summit - June 22, 2010
Beth Flanagan and Ben Vaughn's presentation, "Supporting Schools' Sustainable and Educational Goals with Nature Play" discussed recent work with the Willamette Primary playground renovation and the new West Linn Primary School site design (both in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District), and how they incorporated Nature Play issues within the scope of bond measures and limited budgets.
The Cyan certified LEED Gold
Walker Macy was part of the design team for the new Cyan mixed-use residential building in Portland's Auditorium District. It has just been certified LEED Gold in recognition of the building's ambitious sustainability program. A detailed case study has been recently published here. More Project information
Docks Riverfront Promenade Opening Day
Walker Macy led the design team for Sacramento's landmark riverfront park project, The Docks Riverfront Promenade. The City hosted an opening day celebration June 2 at the Park. More news and images to come. Project information
Saturday Market Opens at New Waterfront Location
Walker Macy's design for the Portland Saturday Market's new plaza in Waterfront Park opened to the public May 1st. The new market plaza is part of a larger project area including work under the Burnside Bridge.
Groundbreaking Ceremony
Groundbreaking at the site of the Oregon National Guard's Armed Forces Reserve Center in Clackamas, Oregon occurred May 29. Walker Macy is part of the design team, responsible for landscape design, stormwater management, and other features.
Warrenton Master Plan
The City of Warrenton has hired Walker Macy to develop master plans for its neglected downtown and nearby arena. The work will help Warrenton link the waterfront to downtown to promote urban renewal.
